Alaskan Fisher Folks' Favorite Salmon!

Our wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon offers special appeal to those—like many of us here at Vital Choice—who like their wild salmon firm and flavorful.

These sustainably harvested fish are a super-healthy source of protein, rich in long-chain omega-3 essential fatty acids, and potent natural antioxidants.

And sockeye is a nearly unrivalled food source of bone-saving, cancer-curbing vitamin D, with a whopping 1,100 IU per 6-oz serving, or nearly triple the US RDA.

Our flash-frozen portions come vacuum-sealed for superior quality and convenience.

Certified Kosher by EarthK.

World's Finest Fish Oil ... Whole and Unrefined

Our "whole food"
Omega-3 Salmon Oil supplements contain only unrefined oil from wild Alaska Sockeye Salmon: a fish whose renowned purity is reflected in the pristine contents of our naturally colorful capsules.

Unlike standard fish oils, our naturally pure Sockeye Salmon Oil does not need to be chemically refined: a process that can damage omega-3s. Instead, our oil's
purity and potency are certified by NSF.

As a result, our whole, unrefined Sockeye Salmon Oil retains all of the omega-3s (EPA & DHA), vitamin D, phospholipids, and fatty acids natural to whole Sockeye Salmon.

The rich orange hue of our Salmon Oil comes from its natural complement of astaxanthin: the super-potent antioxidant pigment that gives Sockeye their distinctive color and protects our Salmon Oil's abundant omega-3s from oxidation.

In addition, ours was the first Salmon Oil supplement certified as sustainably sourced by the Marine Stewardship Council
.

We encapsulate our Salmon Oil in pure fish gelatin, and offer special varieties for special needs:

 Smaller Softgels (500 mg)

Liquid Salmon Oil for children and folks who may have trouble swallowing our 1,000 mg softgels

Lemon-Flavored Salmon Oil for folks who experience bounce-back.

Smoky Succulence, Par Exellence

Vital Choice smoked Salmon is far superior to the notably greasy stuff made with farmed fish.

After curing in natural alder wood smoke, our Smoked Sockeye Portions and silky, cold-smoked Sliced Nova Lox are immediately vacuum-packed and flash-frozen.  Thawed and served, they taste as though they came fresh out of the smoker.

Don't overlook our Smoked Salmon Sampler, which is our best smoked value by far. It has just one drawback: you'll get hooked on every part, and especially on our addictive Yukon King Salmon and Yukon King Salmon "Candy"!

"I am in love with the hot-smoked salmon. It is fabulous flaked and scrambled with eggs and onions. They give the eggs a lovely zing." — Dana Jacobi, author of 12 Best Foods Cookbook.

Berries Bursting with Flavor and Health

Vital Choice fresh-frozen organic blueberries, strawberries and red raspberries are rich in anti-aging antioxidants, and draw customer comments like this:
"OH MY GOODNESS! I cannot believe the flavor ... the taste reminds me of something from my childhood. Thanks for a great product!"

Berries are incredibly healthful foods, and it's smart to seek out organic berries, grown without synthetic pesticides.

Our organic berries come in convenient one pound bags, each yielding about 3-1/2 cups. They freeze well, so you can keep plenty on hand!

Salmon Beats Fish Oil for Blood Benefits
Clinical trials find salmon superior to fish oil for improving dieters’ blood fat profiles
by Craig Weatherby

Click for full story and printer friendly version

Last year, we reported surprising clinical results showing that people absorbed omega-3s better from whole salmon than from standard fish oil supplements.

For more on that, see “Salmon Beats Fish Oil for Absorption of Omega-3s”. (This finding may or may not apply to our whole, unrefined Sockeye Salmon Oil, whose fat profile closely matches that of wild salmon.)

Now, an international research team reports that –  compared with people who took standard fish oil supplements – overweight people who ate salmon gained healthier blood fat profiles.

These findings fit the increasingly credible hypothesis that whole foods are generally superior to supplements. (See “Whole Foods Seen Superior to Supplements”.)

Here are the details.

Salmon worked better than fish oil for improving blood fats

Researchers from Spain, Iceland, and Ireland recruited 35 overweight or obese volunteers (Marqués M et al. 2008).

The volunteers’ average age was 33, and their average body mass index was 30.5 kilograms per square meter (kg/m2). By contrast, healthy BMIs range from 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m2.

The participants were placed on a specific lower-calorie, balanced diet for eight weeks, and were divided into ...

Giant Salmon Fuels Hopes for California Fishery
Discovery of a huge King salmon bodes well for the future of California’s wild salmon

Click for full story. Photo by Doug Killam, CA Dept. of Fish & Game

Last week, California Fish & Game biologists spied a giant King salmon on the banks of a creek that feeds the Sacramento River.

Weighing 85 pounds and measuring more than 4 feet long, it was the biggest salmon caught in California for almost 30 years. (It's shown in the picture accompanying this article.)

Last week's giant catch is more good news for the future of California’s wild salmon, which nearly disappeared last spring. (See “California Salmon Crisis Closes West Coast Fishery” and “Salmon Crisis Raises Cost and Supply Concerns”.)

The salmon fisheries off California and Oregon are very small compared with Alaska, which provides 95 percent of wild salmon – but they support many fishing families, and feed many folks on the West Coast.

The find is good news for two reasons:

First, the salmon appears to have spawned successfully, which means that its rare genetics will be passed down to its progeny.

Second, its unusual size affirms indications that 2008 has been the richest year of marine food production in more than 10 years.

That scarcity pummeled the salmon population from California to Oregon, but left wild Alaskan salmon unaffected, because they feed in areas far to the north.

Some blamed global warming, or low water in the Sacramento River basin, but most scientists say the crash was due to a scarcity of food in the ocean, caused by a shift in winds.

But this past spring, strong winds out of the northwest returned for the first time in three years.

This ocean bounty follows two summers of little upwelling in the ocean, resulting in meager rations for ...

Fishy Diets Linked to Lower Kidney Risk in Diabetes
Large study adds more evidence that omega-3s may help deter the kidney damage associated with diabetes
by Craig Weatherby

Click for full story and printer friendly version

We’ve reported before on the promise of omega-3-rich diets in diabetes ... and now there's more good news.

Population studies show lower rates of glucose intolerance and its eventual outcome – type 2 diabetes – wherever people consume large amounts of fish.

Almost certainly, the reason for this apparent reduced risk is the omega-3s in fish.

Controlled clinical studies show that consumption of marine omega-3s reduces heart risks in people with type 2 diabetes, without any adverse effects on blood sugar control or insulin activity (Nettleton JA, Katz R 2005).

And preliminary evidence suggests that for overweight people, increased consumption of omega-3s – along with reduced intake of saturated fat – may reduce the risk that impaired glucose tolerance will become type 2 diabetes.

Diets high in omega-3s are also associated with reduced risk of albuminuria, reduced inflammation, less oxidative stress, and less obesity.

For more on this topic, see “Diabetes Study Debacle: Can Fishy Nutrients Help?”, which contains links to prior articles on research into omega-3s and diabetes.

Fish linked to lower risk of diabetic kidney disease

An analysis of data collected from more than 22,300 middle-aged and older English men and women suggest that eating fish may reduce the risk of kidney disease pretty dramatically (Lee CT et al. 2008).

English researchers studied medical records of people who were part of a large European cancer study

Out of the 517 subjects who had diabetes – mostly type 2 or “adult onset” diabetes – those who reported eating fish twice a week were four times less likely to show the signs of kidney failure (albumin in their urine) compared with the diabetics who averaged less than one serving of fish per week.

As the authors concluded, “These findings merit confirmation in prospective studies and intervention trials and suggest that fish intake may ...

Vital Recipes
Salmon Roasted with Herbs
It could have been the start of a beautiful friendship.

When it comes to alternatives to the traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinner, sparkling wild Alaskan Salmon makes a spectacular, broadly appealing choice.

Remember, the first Thanksgiving featured fish as well as fowl!
And Salmon is very quick to cook, so you won’t be slaving in a hot kitchen or worrying about over- or under-cooking a big, unwieldy bird.

Salmon would fit well with traditional side dishes such as a rice (mixed with wild rice), squash, peas, potatoes, asparagus, and all the usual suspects … including cranberries!

We adapted this recipe from one by an old colleague, New York Times food columnist Mark Bittman, bestselling author of How to Cook Everything and, closer to our hearts, Fish: The Complete Guide to Buying and Cooking.

Mark is a great cook, with a knack for devising dishes that are simple yet deeply satisfying.

Salmon Roasted with Herbs

Adapted from Mark Bittman.
Makes 4 to 6 servings

4 tablespoons organic extra virgin olive oil

2 (24 oz each) whole wild Salmon fillets, skin on (scales removed) or off

Sea salt and organic black pepper to taste

1 teaspoon minced fresh tarragon

1 tablespoon chopped dill

2 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley leaves

  • Preheat the oven to 475 degrees. Heat the oil in a medium roasting pan, either on top of the stove or in the oven as it preheats.
  • Stir in the tarragon, dill, and half the parsley. Place the salmon in the pan, flesh side down, and put the pan in the oven. Roast about 5 minutes, then turn and roast 3 to 4 minutes longer, until the salmon is just done (peek between the flakes with a thin-bladed knife). Remove Salmon from the oven when it is still a bit dark in the center. Let it sit, covered for a few minutes to cook in its own heat, then check it again.
  • Sprinkle with salt and pepper, garnish, and serve immediately, with the pan juices spooned over, and garnished with the parsley.
