Deep Red ,and Decidedly Delicious

Our wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon offers special appeal to those—like many of us here at Vital Choice—who like their wild salmon firm and flavorful.

These sustainably harvested fish are a super-healthy source of protein, rich in long-chain omega-3 essential fatty acids, and potent natural antioxidants.

And sockeye is a nearly unrivalled food source of bone-saving, cancer-curbing vitamin D, with a whopping 1,100 IU per 6-oz serving, or nearly triple the US RDA.

Our flash-frozen portions come vacuum-sealed for superior quality and convenience.

Certified Kosher by EarthK.

Light, Luscious Alaskan Halibut

Our Alaskan halibut is light and lean with a wonderful flavor and texture. With longer-lived predatory fish like halibut and tuna, age and purity go hand in hand--the younger and smaller the fish, the purer it will be.

Vital Choice offers you the peace of mind of knowing that you're buying the purest halibut available by procuring only the smallest, sustainably-harvested fish (unlike store or restaurant bought halibut--where it's almost impossible to know what you're getting.)

Save on our Halibut by choosing our vacuum-sealed 2-lb. packages of smaller pieces, frozen together in one solid block. They're an excellent value, and great for quick, healthy stir-fries, fish tacos, sashimi or sushi rolls.

"Absolutely delicious! My kids devoured every morsel of the halibut and have asked me to order more. Thank you for sharing your wonderful secret with us."
-- Michele S. Cook of Lake City, Florida

Spectacular Wild Alaskan Scallops

People seem to swoon over our sweet, succulent, sustainably harvested Alaska weathervane scallops.

Unlike common farmed varieties, Vital Choice scallops grow as nature intended in the cold, clear waters near Kodiak Island, Alaska.

They're individually quick frozen and available in convenient re-sealable bags, so that you can take only the scallops you need and return the rest to the freezer.

Beautiful Wild & Organic Berries

Vital Choice fresh-frozen organic blueberries, strawberries and red raspberries are rich in anti-aging antioxidants, and draw customer comments like this:
"OH MY GOODNESS! I cannot believe the flavor ... the taste reminds me of something from my childhood. Thanks for a great product!"

Berries are incredibly healthful foods, and it's smart to seek out organic berries, grown without synthetic pesticides.

Our organic berries come in convenient one pound bags, each yielding about 3-1/2 cups. They freeze well, so you can keep plenty on hand!

All that Glitters is Silver ... Salmon!

Silver Salmon - also known as Coho - is the unsung culinary star of Alaska's wild harvest.

Our Silver Salmon is wonderfully moist, despite having less fat and fewer calories than Sockeye or King.

(Although Silver is 30% leaner than Sockeye, it offers just as many omega-3s ... about 2,000 mg per 6 oz portion.)

Unlike our Sockeye and King, Vital Choice Silver Salmon portions come with the skin on one side, which helps keep them moist on the grill.

World's Finest Fish Oil ... Whole and Unrefined

Our "whole food"
Omega-3 Salmon Oil supplements contain only unrefined oil from wild Alaska Sockeye Salmon: a fish whose renowned purity is reflected in the pristine contents of our naturally colorful capsules.

Unlike standard fish oils, our naturally pure Sockeye Salmon Oil does not need to be chemically refined: a process that can damage omega-3s. Instead, our oil's
purity and potency are certified by NSF.

As a result, our whole, unrefined Sockeye Salmon Oil retains all of the omega-3s (EPA & DHA), vitamin D, phospholipids, and fatty acids natural to whole Sockeye Salmon.

The rich orange hue of our Salmon Oil comes from its natural complement of astaxanthin: the super-potent antioxidant pigment that gives Sockeye their distinctive color and protects our Salmon Oil's abundant omega-3s from oxidation.

In addition, ours was the first Salmon Oil supplement certified as sustainably sourced by the Marine Stewardship Council
.

We encapsulate our Salmon Oil in pure fish gelatin, and offer special varieties for special needs:

 Smaller Softgels (500 mg)

Liquid Salmon Oil for children and folks who may have trouble swallowing our 1,000 mg softgels

Lemon-Flavored Salmon Oil for folks who experience bounce-back.

Healthy, Tasty Salmon Sausage

People seem to really love our Wild Sockeye Salmon Sausage, which comes in three succulent varieties: Savory Country Breakfast Style, Spicy Italian, and NEW Chorizo Style.

The ingredients couldn’t be simpler: just Wild Alaskan sockeye salmon, 100% organic herbs and spices, organic arrowroot, natural sea salt, and water. For tips on how to cook 'em from straight from the freezer, see our Web site.

Fish and Omega-3s Linked to Prostate Health ... Again
Analysis of famed Physicians’ Health Study affirms prostate-protective potential of omega-3s
by Craig Weatherby

Click for full story and printer friendly version. Image credit centralmediaserver.com

Prostate cancer claims as many lives as breast cancer, albeit at more advanced ages.

Major risk factors for prostate cancer – including diets low in greens and high in red meat and dairy foods and (ironically) a longer lifespan – are rife in the developed world.

In 2005, prostate cancer affected 18 percent and killed three percent of of American men.

Evidence that omega-3 fatty acids curb the growth of cancer cells continues to mount.

Key Points

  • Men who ate fish in abundance were 48 percent less likely to have died from prostate cancer over a 19-year period.
  • Men who consumed the most omega-3s were 36 percent less likely to have died from prostate cancer.
  • No preventive effect of fish or omega-3s was found, but this contradicts positive indications from a report that used blood tests to pinpoint actual omega-3 intake.

In contrast, it is increasingly clear that – when consumed in excess – omega-6 fatty acids promote tumor growth.

Americans ingest omega-6 fats in enormous amounts, relative to intake of omega-3s.

This is because Americans eat little omega-3-rich seafood and scant amounts of omega-3-containig greens, while omega-6 fats abound in our most commonly consumed foods.

Omega-6 fats predominate in cheap vegetable oils – corn, soy, cottonseed, sunflower, safflower, and canola – in the packaged foods made with these oils, and in factory-farmed (grain-fed) fish, poultry, and meats.

In Japan – where omega-3 intakes (from seafood) are much higher and omega-6 intakes are much lower than in Western countries – death rates from prostate cancer are only about one-fifth to one-half of those found in the U.S. and Europe (Wakai K 2005).

The overlooked omega connection to prostate and other cancers

In March of 2006, we reported the results of two studies in human prostate cancer cells, which showed that omega-3s retard, and omega-6s fuel their growth (see ...

Fish-Borne Mineral May Deter Metabolic Syndrome
Selenium may reduce risk of syndrome linked to heart disease and diabetes; Animal study affirms mineral’s ability to block mercury impacts

Click for full story and printer friendly version

Selenium is a metallic mineral that forms a critical part of the body’s internal antioxidant network.

This is because selenium is an essential component of an antioxidant enzyme called glutathione peroxidase

As such selenium is needed to control the oxidizing free radicals generated by normal metabolism and by pollutants and starchy, sugary foods.

Free radicals promote inflammation, so selenium is also needed to control this silent driving force behind heart disease, dementia, cancer, and diabetes.

According the U.S. National Institutes of Health, rates of death from major cancers is lower among people with higher blood levels or intake of selenium (NIH 2008).

Key Points

  • Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is linked to heart disease and diabetes.
  • Clinical study links higher selenium levels to lower risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS).
  • Seafood is the richest source of selenium and of omega-3s, which are also linked to reduced risk of MetS.
  • The new findings affirm the unique anti-MetS potential of fish and shellfish

The U.S. NIH makes this salient point about selenium and heart disease: “… it is the oxidized form of low-density lipoproteins (LDL, often called ‘bad’ cholesterol) that promotes plaque build-up in coronary arteries. Selenium is one of a group of antioxidants that may help limit the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and thereby help to prevent coronary artery disease.” (NIH 2008)

Given its role as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory agent, it is not very surprising that a new study from Spain finds a link between higher selenium levels and reduced risk of metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome: The body’s own “cluster bomb”

According to the American Heart Association, more than 50 million Americans have metabolic syndrome (MetS).

This cluster of physiological characteristics is linked to increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

MetS is defined as having three or more of a half-dozen metabolic risk factors:

  • Abdominal obesity (excessive fat tissue in and around the abdomen).
  • High blood triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol and high LDL cholesterol: a state that fosters plaque buildups in artery walls.
  • Elevated blood pressure.
  • Insulin resistance or glucose intolerance (the body can’t properly use insulin or blood sugar).
  • Pro-thrombotic state that promotes dangerous clots (e.g., high fibrinogen or plasminogen activator inhibitor–1 in the blood).

The adult RDA ranges from 55 to 70 micrograms (mcg), and the Upper Intake Level is 400 mcg per day (NIH 2008).

  • Pro-inflammatory state (e.g., elevated C-reactive protein in the blood).

The syndrome is very real and is largely responsible for the epidemic of cardiovascular disease and diabetes that’s exploding throughout the developed and developing worlds.

We’ve reported research that points to dietary patterns and food factors that appear to promote or deter MetS; to learn more, simply search our newsletter archive for “metabolic”.

And encouraging new research from a Spanish scientific team suggests that selenium may help ...

Letters to the Editor
Trauma Article Draws an Expert Reader’s Response
A Vital Choices reader well-versed in the subject had cogent comments on our article about trauma counseling

Click for full story and printer friendly version

Last week, we published an article about the effects of counseling on victims of traumas, including car accidents and the like.

The article, titled “Post-Trauma Counseling? Thanks, but No Thanks”, focused on the generally negative scientific reviews of trauma-counseling efforts.

And it featured the results of a Web-based survey of Americans who claimed to have been negatively impacted by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Our overall impression was that much of what passes for post-trauma counseling provides no benefit and can often be counterproductive.

We received a thoughful letter in response from experienced Marriage and Family Therapist Sheryll Thomson, and wanted to share it with our readers.

Dear Craig,

I have appreciated so much your information on nutrition and illness from your emails and on your website and have forwarded many to others.

I scanned your article on trauma therapy and find it is lacking in some respects. I was a therapist trained in trauma therapy for many years (therapist for 25 years; trauma training and practice for over ten years).

This study is useful as far as it goes, but it doesn't give anyone, especially therapists, an idea of ...

Vital Recipes
Potato, Salmon and Spinach Patties with Garlicky Dill Cream
Click for full story. Photo credit: Andrew Scrivani/The New York Times

Today’s recipe is adapted from the November 19, 2008 edition of The New York Times. We tried it out, and it really is very good.

It’s the perfect way to deal with leftover mashed potatoes from Thanksgiving, and the other ingredients elevate the humble spud into a healthier realm.

As author Melisa Clark wrote, concerning Thanksgiving leftovers, “The losers are the mashed potatoes. Gluey when reheated and even worse cold from the fridge, the trash can is their inevitable fate. But this year, my leftover mashed potatoes are destined for a higher purpose … crisp-fried potato, salmon and spinach patties with a garlicky dill cream.”

We liked this recipe with sautéed green cabbage (add some caraway seeds while cooking), which fits the generally Scandinavian orientation of the salmon patties very well.

Potato, Salmon and Spinach Patties with Garlicky Dill Cream

Time: 45 minutes plus at least 30 minutes’ chilling

Yield: 12 patties.

Potato Salmon patty ingredients

10 ounces chopped spinach

2 cups mashed potatoes, chilled

8 oz of cooked wild Alaskan Salmon fillet, flaked, OR a 8 oz of skinless-boneless canned Wild Red sockeye Salmon, flaked

2 1/2 cups panko or bread crumbs

4 large eggs

2 tsp sea salt

1 tsp organic black pepper

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

Garlicky Dill Cream ingredients

2 garlic cloves, finely chopped

1/2 tsp sea salt, or more to taste

1 cup light sour cream

1/4 cup chopped fresh dill or 1 Tbsp organic dried dill

2 Tbsp canned horseradish (optional)

Organic black pepper, to taste

Organic extra virgin olive oil for frying

  • Squeeze as much water from spinach as possible. Place in a bowl and add potatoes, salmon, 1 cup ...
