"OH MY GOODNESS! I cannot believe the flavor ... the taste reminds me of something from my childhood. Thanks for a great product!"

Berries are incredibly healthful foods, and it's smart to seek out organic berries, grown without synthetic pesticides.

Our organic berries come in convenient one pound bags, each yielding about 3-1/2 cups. They freeze well, so you can keep plenty on hand!

World's Finest Fish Oil ... Whole and Unrefined

Our "whole food"
Omega-3 Salmon Oil supplements contain only unrefined oil from wild Alaska Sockeye Salmon: a fish whose renowned purity is reflected in the pristine contents of our naturally colorful capsules.

Unlike standard fish oils, our naturally pure Sockeye Salmon Oil does not need to be chemically refined: a process that can damage omega-3s. Instead, our oil's
purity and potency are certified by NSF.

As a result, our whole, unrefined Sockeye Salmon Oil retains all of the omega-3s (EPA & DHA), vitamin D, phospholipids, and fatty acids natural to whole Sockeye Salmon.

The rich orange hue of our Salmon Oil comes from its natural complement of astaxanthin: the super-potent antioxidant pigment that gives Sockeye their distinctive color and protects our Salmon Oil's abundant omega-3s from oxidation.

In addition, ours was the first Salmon Oil supplement certified as sustainably sourced by the Marine Stewardship Council
.

We encapsulate our Salmon Oil in pure fish gelatin, and offer special varieties for special needs:

 Smaller Softgels (500 mg)

Liquid Salmon Oil for children and folks who may have trouble swallowing our 1,000 mg softgels

Lemon-Flavored Salmon Oil for folks who experience bounce-back.

Salmon Sausage by Vital Choice and Dr. Weil

People seem to really love our Wild Sockeye Salmon Sausage, which comes in three succulent varieties: Savory Country Breakfast Style, Spicy Italian, and NEW Chorizo Style.

The ingredients couldn’t be simpler: just Wild Alaskan sockeye salmon, 100% organic herbs and spices, organic arrowroot, natural sea salt, and water. For tips on how to cook 'em from straight from the freezer, see our Web site.

“I just tried your new Country breakfast sausage for the first time … they are wonderful! I never thought a salmon sausage would be this good. Thanks!” — Dr. Bruce Felgenhauer

Smoky Succulence for Breakfast ... or Anytime!

Vital Choice smoked Salmon is far superior to the notably greasy stuff made with farmed fish.

After curing in natural alder wood smoke, our Smoked Sockeye Portions and silky, cold-smoked Sliced Nova Lox are immediately vacuum-packed and flash-frozen.  Thawed and served, they taste as though they came fresh out of the smoker.

Don't overlook our Smoked Salmon Sampler, which is our best smoked value by far. It has just one drawback: you'll get hooked on every part, and especially on our addictive Yukon King Salmon and Yukon King Salmon "Candy"!

"I am in love with the hot-smoked salmon. It is fabulous flaked and scrambled with eggs and onions. They give the eggs a lovely zing." — Dana Jacobi, author of 12 Best Foods Cookbook.

The Chocolate of Fish!

Sablefish is rarely seen in standard fish markets, but t
his buttery, flaky, white fish boasts its own rich texture and mind-blowing flavor ... and even more omega-3s than wild Salmon!

In addition to our certified Earth Kosher Sablefish, we feature golden Oven-Ready Smoked Sablefish: scrumptious, steaks infused with delicate alder wood smoke flavor, which cook fully from frozen in just a few minutes.

Watchdog Group Decries High-Dose Omega-3 Drug
Rationale for monopolistic omega-3 drug undermined by new concerns; WorstPills.org says Lovaza's cholesterol impacts undermine its benefits
by Craig Weatherby

Click for full story and printer friendly version

Heart-health authorities worldwide recommend that healthy people consume 500mg of omega-3s daily, and say that heart patients should take 1000mg (one gram) per day.

But the small minority of people with very high blood levels of triglycerides (fats) are urged to take the higher doses, ranging from 2 to 4 grams per day, needed to yield and sustain dramatic reductions.

If you have very high triglyceride levels that need lowering, the FDA and drug giant GlaxoSmithKline have a sucker's proposition for you.

Instead of a standard or high-dose fish oil supplement, you can take a high-dose prescription fish oil product called Lovaza®.

You may be able to take fewer capsules per day, but you will gain higher LDL cholesterol levels ... with no guarantee of lowering your heart risks any more than with standard, lower-dose fish oil.

Key Points
  • Prescription fish oil costs 3 to 20 times more than fish oil supplements for the same dose of omega-3s.
  • The very high omega-3 doses in prescription fish oil (Lovaza®) lower high triglyceride levels far more than standard fish oils do.
  • High-dose fish oils are not proven to beat lower dose oils for reducing heart disease risk or heart-related death rates.
  • High-dose fish oil raises LDL cholesterol levels much more than standard fish oil does; the implications are uncertain but more likely negative.
Better yet for GlaxoSmithKline, you or a willing insurance company will pay $2,000 to 3,000 more than you'd spend for the same dose of the same omega-3s, delivered by a standard fish oil supplement.

A monopoly won by patent law and deep pockets ... not invention
If a doctor wants to prescribe fish oil for a patient’s high triglyceride levels, only one omega-3 fish oil supplement enjoys the status of an FDA-approved drug, with the possibility of being reimbursed by health insurance.

The FDA allows only Lovaza® brand omega-3 fish oil to make a drug claim … with the consequent opportunity to make loads of money from patients with generous health insurance.

This unique prescription omega-3 product made by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is FDA-approved for the purpose of lowering very high (greater than 500 mg/dL) triglyceride levels in adults.

High triglyceride levels are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and death, and can lead to dangerous liver disease.

Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil especially the omega-3 called DHA lower triglyceride levels by decreasing the production of triglycerides in the liver, and by boosting clearance of excess triglycerides from the blood.

High daily doses of omega-3s (2-4 grams) lower triglyceride levels the most, at least among people with very high triglyceride levels.

But large clinical trials show that people who consume smaller daily doses of omega-3s (1 to 2 grams) enjoy substantially lowered levels of triglycerides plus a reduced risk of heart-related deaths (Schwellenbach LJ et al. 2006; Harris WS et al. 2007; Harris WS et al. 2008).

In fact, while the high omega-3 doses delivered by Lovaza® are clinically proven to reduce high triglyceride levels by about one-third, Lovaza® has not been tested or proven to prevent cardiovascular disease or reduce the risk of heart-related death.

And while high doses of omega-3s, such as those found in chemically concentrated fish oils like LovazaÒ, can lower triglyceride levels much more than smaller doses do, there is no evidence that extremely high doses ...

Food-Borne Antioxidants Affirmed as Anti-Aging Allies
Scientists examine effects beyond scavenging of free radicals; Cell membrane effects cited as key factors behind the benefits of antioxidant pigments in salmon and curry
by Craig Weatherby

Click for full story and printer friendly version
Many researchers blame aging on an excess of free radicals … and/or age-related declines in people’s innate network of enzymes, vitamins, and other antioxidant chemicals.

But two months back, we reported on a study that seemed to undermine the widely accepted idea that free radicals cause or accelerate aging.

Researchers at Montreal’s McGill University published lab results showing that worms actually lived longer when their innate ability to “scavenge” free radicals was partially disabled.

However, U.S. researchers who’ve reviewed the literature recently found ample evidence that age-related cognitive decline can be mitigated by diets high in colorful foods, herbs, and spices rich in polyphenol-type antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids.

Leading examples of such anti-aging super foods include dark leafy greens, walnuts, salmon, cocoa, tea, turmeric, and berries.

How do we explain the discrepancy between the worm study and mountains of evidence in support of dietary antioxidants as anti-aging agents?

The worm study may be partly right … perhaps internal and dietary antioxidants are not the key to slowing aging.

Beyond antioxidants ... the myriad roots of plant pigments' powers

An increasing body of evidence indicates that plant “antioxidants” possess other powers that are more important ...

Rachael Ray Features Vital Choice!
Cheerful TV chef’s magazine gives us prominent placement

Randy Hartnell in Everyday with Rachel Ray
We’re very pleased to be featured in the May, 2009 edition of “Everyday with Rachael Ray”, the perky TV chef’s popular monthly magazine.

We appear on page 94, in the Eat Your Heart Out section, where the editors devoted a two-page spread to Vital Choice.

The article quotes founder Randy Hartnell on picking, storing, and preparing salmon.

They quote Randy saying, “Wild salmon is the superman of the animal world. It swims through steams, oceans, and even waterfalls, while avoiding predators. If you are what you eat, wild salmon is hard to beat.”

Unfortunately, they also misquoted Randy as saying, “All fish is frozen once it is caught,” which he didn’t say and never would, because that is wrong. (Many, but not all, fish are frozen after harvest.)

They also included our recipe for Salmon with Dill, Fennel, and Lemon Rub, which we'll run in this newsletter soon.

Check it out on your local newsstand!

Vital Recipes
Cashew Salmon with Couscous and Yogurt Sauce
Today’s recipe contrasts the rich, nutty goodness of organic cashews with the fresh flavors of wild salmon, herbs, and seasonings.

Graced with a yogurt sauce featuring lemon, cumin and cilantro, this inspired recipe for grilled salmon and couscous combines flavors from Indian and Middle Eastern traditions to devastatingly delicious effect!

Serve with sautéed snap peas or spinach and a glass of chilled white wine.

Cashew Salmon with Yogurt Sauce and Couscous
Adapted from Eating Well. Prep time 35 minutes.
Makes 4 servings

½ cup nonfat plain yogurt
3 scallions, sliced, greens and whites separated
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
¾ teaspoon sea salt, divided
½ teaspoon coarse ground organic pepper, divided
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger (or organic garlic granules)
1¼ cups water
1 cup whole-wheat couscous
4 (6 oz each) wild salmon fillet portions, cut into 4 portions
¼ cup raw organic cashews, chopped and toasted (see Tip)
  • Preheat grill to medium-high or position rack in upper third of oven and preheat broiler.
  • Combine yogurt, scallion greens, lemon juice, cilantro, cumin, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in a medium bowl.
  • Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add ginger, scallion whites and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cook, stirring, until softened, about 2 minutes. Add water and bring to a boil over high heat. Stir in couscous. Remove from heat, cover and let stand until the liquid is absorbed, about 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork.
  • Meanwhile, rub salmon with the remaining 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper. If broiling, coat a broiler pan with cooking spray. If grilling, oil the grill rack*. Grill or broil the salmon until browned and just cooked through, about 3 minutes per side. Serve with the couscous, topped with the yogurt sauce and cashews.
Tip: To toast chopped cashews, cook in a small dry skillet over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until fragrant and lightly browned, 2 to 4 minutes.

*Oil a folded paper towel, hold it with tongs and brush it over the rack. (Do not use cooking spray on a hot grill.)
